UK General Election
6th May 2010
Catholic Voters Guide
The election provides us with an opportunity to select politicians who will best serve our country and constituencies. Catholics will obviously have varied political views on all sorts of political, economic and social issues. This is a good thing as it should allow Catholics to be the leaven throughout the world of politics. There are however important principles which apply to all aspects of life because they touch on the respect that we ought to have for all people and the concern that we have for the wellbeing of the whole of society. For this reason a short questionnaire is proposed(see the link below) to identify the views of political candidates on policies which touch on the principles which provide the pillars of a fair and decent society. It is an ongoing task for Catholics to familiarise themselves with the depth of the Church’s social teaching the most recent social encyclicals are provided by links below but a short statement is also provided to give an outline of some points of that teaching.
There is also a link to questions which have been posed to candidates across Scotland. Candidates will often only answer these when approached by a constituent in the area they are standing so your help in approaching them is required to allow as many answers as possible to be given in the link page below. It will also offer you some ideas for questions which you can put directly to candidates.
